All-on-6 dental implants – cost abroad, the procedure and diet

Dental implants are the most reliable, stable, bone-preserving option in tooth replacement and a great alternative to false teeth. You might have heard about All-on-6 dental implants, but what are they? Why only six implants? Are dental implants in a day a reality? How does this work and how much does it cost?

What is All-on-6 dental implants?

All-on-6, also dubbed ‘smile in a day’ or ‘same day teeth implants’ are one of the best alternatives to dentures. All-on-6 is a tooth replacement method that comprises a dental bridge supported by six titanium dental implants. This system can be applied to either the upper or lower jaw and replaces the WHOLE set of teeth in one go. The implants are inserted into the jawbone and integrate with the bone so completely that you can be certain they will provide a sturdy support for your bridge. Such a solution allows you to regain your natural facial features and youthful appearance, to retain the bone of the jaw and, most importantly, to eat and function normally.

All-on-6 dental implants – the benefits

This method of tooth replacement has many health benefits to the patient that go beyond cosmetic results. Thanks to All-on-6 dental implants:

  1. Patients retain jawbone volume. With time your jawbone starts to degrade and your facial features radically change. Patients suffering tooth loss who have been wearing traditional dentures for many years usually have very low bone volume. This undesirable process can be prevented with dental implant treatment. Even a few missing teeth can create a situation where the upper teeth, without an opposing tooth structure, can over-erupt. This, in turn, causes deterioration of the underlying bone, which is why replacing every single missing tooth is so important.
  2. Patients regain their natural facial features. Tooth loss makes you look older. Your chin becomes pointed, your lips become smaller, your cheeks may look hollow and your skin may become wrinkled. Having a set of healthy teeth or dental implants not only prevents bone loss, but also significantly improves your appearance.
  3. You can eat and function as normal. With All-on-6 dental implants, you will be able to eat foods not possible with traditional dentures. Implants are deeply rooted in the jawbone to provide a sturdy support even when eating hard or sticky foods like nuts or fudge. The dental bridge, which goes over the implants, is custom shaped to give you a healthy, strong bite. All-on-6 dental implants – how long is the recovery process?

The good news is that the downtime after an All-on-6 procedure can be minimal. If you suffer from complete tooth loss and have significant bone loss, it is unlikely that you would be able to have multiple standard dental implants without prior bone grafting. Bone grafting is a procedure where the jawbone is rebuilt, costing additional money and time. All-on-six implants can be placed without prior bone grafting and, if carried out by an experienced oral surgeon, can take only one day. That is why this procedure has been also dubbed “teeth in a day”. After the dentist has placed the 6 implants, you will be fitted with a temporary bridge, virtually indistinguishable from your permanent one, so you can enjoy your new look from day one. However, this temporary solution is not as strong as a permanent bridge, which will require some time to be designed and produced by the dental lab.

The whole procedure eliminates the need for 16 implants in your lower jaw and 16 implants in your upper jaw, which would be costly, time-consuming and require a longer healing time. Thanks to modern dentistry, you can now have entire rows of teeth replaced with just 6 implants.

Apart from the 6 dental implants, the dentist will design a fixed dental bridge that will rest on the implants and be fixed to them. Crucially, the bridge will not rest on your gums as in the case of traditional dentures, which have a tendency to irritate gums and require unreliable dental adhesive to hold them in place.

The fixed bridge for your six dental implants will be designed using CAD/CAM technology and molded to your mouth and gums. There is no need for denture fixative here as the bridge will be carefully screwed to your implants by your dentist. Patients cannot remove the bridge themselves and there is no need for that. All-on-6 feel like real teeth and, just like natural teeth, require regular maintenance. However, one thing is certain: they will not be affected by cavities. Some dentists may even be able to convert your old dentures into a bridge supported by 6 implants. While this is not possible with all types of dentures, it is worth enquiring about this possibility.

Are All-on-6 dental implants for me?

Is All-on-6 suitable for all dental patients? As with all surgery, there are certain restrictions, however, as long as you are a good candidate for implants in general, you may be a candidate for All-on-6. Dental implants are not recommended if your gums are infected, are pregnant, are a teenager or suffer from any of these conditions. If you qualify for implants but have low jawbone density, All-on-6 is a good solution to bring back stability to the teeth and to restore jaw structure. Patients are attracted to this treatment because additional procedures are rarely required with All-on-6. In some rare cases may a bone graft may be required, however, the convenience of All-on-6 treatment lies in the fact that it can be carried out even on patients with poor bone density. If your bone density is low and your gums thin, traditional dentures may present a problem. Find a clinic and book an online consultation with an implantology specialist or dental surgeon to determine if All-on-6 could save your smile.

All-on-6 implants – diet

If you have had, or currently have traditional dentures, you know all too well that certain foods do not go well with dentures. Seedy fruit such as raspberries, chewy snacks like fudge, flapjacks, cereal bars, and certain meats like beef jerky or steak can be problematic. With a fixed bridge supported on six implants, you will no longer have to worry about excluding those foods from your diet. This is a major advantage or dental implants over dentures. There are no dietary restrictions, so you can again enjoy foods you ate when you had natural teeth. This is possible because the bridge is highly stable and firmly attached to implants integrated with your jaw bone. They look like and feel like natural teeth.

What is the quality of All-on-6 abroad?

The standard of dental treatment in countries such as Hungary, Croatia or Poland is very similar to that in the USA, the UK and Western Europe. Dentists there receive a similar level of education in dentistry with many of them studying abroad in, for example, the UK or the US before returning to their native countries to open their own practices.

Moreover, dentists quickly adopt new technologies such as CAM/CAD dentistry or ceramic dental implants and implement them in their daily work. Most dental professionals regularly participate in international dental conferences and seminars and are abreast of the latest developments in dental care and the newest cutting-edge technologies. Before choosing a clinic for your All-on-6 implants, ask what professional organisations and association their dentists belong to, for example, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists or any other national associations. This will shed some light on the kind of clinic you are dealing with and may offer some reassurance.

What does the All-on-6 procedure look like?

  1. Assessment

During this first phase, you will undergo a thorough examination and have some X-rays and scans done. The dentist will assess the anatomical structures of your mouth and the condition of your jawbone. Some clinics are able to hold this initial consultation remotely via Skype. If you already have photos and panoramic X-rays of your teeth saved on your computer, or on Dropbox or Google Drive, you can safely send them to the clinic together with your inquiry. Go to the list of dental clinics and contact the clinic of your choice by clicking Contact Clinic.

The clinic will come back to you by e-mail or phone to ask for more details and give you an estimate of the cost. The dentist will judge the amount of work to be done and, when you arrive at the clinic, you will have an in-depth examination and have the total cost of the treatment confirmed. You should be aware that upon consultation in the clinic it may be decided that additional procedures will be needed. This is standard procedure as each case is individual and treatment is specific to each individual patient.  After the initial examination, you will have impressions of your teeth and gums taken. These impressions will be used by the laboratory technician to design and manufacture the dental bridge for you.

  1. All-on-6 treatment day

The dental surgeon will insert six implants in your jaw under local anaesthetic. We recommend you book the procedure for the early morning when you are well rested and you should expect treatment to last two hours per jaw. If you have any remaining teeth, these can be extracted at one sitting. The dentist will clean the extraction site thoroughly and proceed to place the implants. You will have four implants placed in the front and two implants, slightly angled, at the back of the jaw.

You will then be fitted with temporary dental bridges based on the impressions previously taken. Such temporary restoration is more fragile and lighter than the permanent bridge, but will allow your gums to heal and you will be able to eat most foods and have all the aesthetic benefits of the permanent bridge. This is also the time to choose the shade of your permanent restoration and to see how you feel about the shape of your new teeth. Nowadays, as dental bridges and crowns are designed using computer software, your dentist should be able to show you a simulation of your new smile on the screen.

Dental implants need about six months to integrate fully with your jawbone, after which time, the permanent dental bridge can be fixed to the implants.

  1. Permanent Restoration

After the custom-designed dental bridge is fitted, your new smile will be whiter and healthier-looking than your natural teeth.

All-on-4 vs. all-on-6 dental implants

What’s the difference between these two procedures? The most obvious difference between these two methods is the number of tooth implants which are inserted. All-on-4 utilizes four implants, while All-on-6 uses six implants. Certainly, there are more differences and every dental clinic usually favours one method over the other based on their previous clinical experience with patients.

Some dentists recommend the All On 6 dental implants because six implants provide better strength and stability which in turn gives patients more comfortable smile and improved eating functions. In case of implants it is crucial that the pressure is spread evenly onto all the implants and through to your jaw. Those two extra implants, their specific location and placement, give patients more stability and plenty of long term benefits.
